It was part of a series of childrens' versions of classic literature -- possibly but not necessarily from Time-Life. (I want to say that the Robin Hood book was #4, but that's a guess.) Others in the series were Charles Kingsley's THE HEROES, Owen Wister's THE VIRGINIAN, and a selection of Sherlock Holmes stories. These were republished by Bethleham Books in the 1990's and are still available from them.

Written by Mabel O'Donnell, it was published by Row, Peterson and Company as If I Were Going in 1936 and 1941. I contacted a bookseller who had this book and asked them if they could send me an email with a scanned picture of the illustration I described. Get A Clue: Bible Mysteries for Kid Detectives to Solve was written by Julie Campbell. I believe she is coming home from school when the bomb is dropped.

This was actually the first book he wrote, but the fourth published. 1930, Doubleday, Doran. The illistrations were lovely lots of blues and yellows. They use flowers and leaves and berries to do so, but in the end realize they were fine as they were. I have NO idea who the author is or the title, but I'd REALLY like to obtain a copy of this book once again! I read a novel centered about a boy who inherited his uncle's library just before the San Francisco earthquake.
